Equivalent to a 28-135mm lens, this new Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens brings true wide-angle to Tele coverage to EOS 20D and Digital Rebel shooters. Ring-type Ultrasonic motor for superior AF performance; allows full-time MF
Image Stabilization extends the lens's usefulness in low-light levels
Circular aperture design -- natural highlights, even stopped down two stops
Non-rotating front element; lens length does not change during zooming

Christopher B. from W MIDDLESEX, PA:
$515 is almost as much as the kit for my camera cost, however I do like the Lens. I did a lot of research and while other lenses did better at different things (which in the grand scheme of things are almost un-noticeable except at full resolution and you are actually looking for it or someone else is pointing it out), this lens was the reviewers favorite because of its relatively compact design compared to the most frequently used distances from the subject. This was my first lens, upgraded from the Kit lens that came with the camera which ended up being broken at a 1 year old B-day party. So I needed a mid-range lens to replace it and this was the best I could find without venturing into the LG lenses.
The 17 to 85 is a great range for almost anything and the length/weight of the lens is better than the 18-200 that I was considering. I LOVED the long range of the zoom that was available, but it was heavy and wouldn't fit in my smaller camera bag that I carry day to day. It takes good pictures in the light, indoors and everywhere I've used it so far. The USM focuses more quickly and more accurately than the kit lens, and the front bevel doesn't rotate making polarizing lenses functional.
This is a great everyday use lens. It takes good Macro and telephoto pictures, but if you want to take amazing Macro & Telephoto pictures, buy a lens designed for them, but for every-day photography, this lens can't be beat for the price.
