As one can imagine, one of the cool things about working for a camera store is that the staff gets to test out the latest gear. Since we wanted to see what this new camera could do out in the field, one of our Los Angeles Canon pros borrowed an R body for a couple of days.
He returned with images that provided a peek into the camera's many advanced features. We narrowed it down to our top five favorites.
Here are five things we love about the Canon EOS R Mirrorless Camera.
The R's electronic viewfinder is unbelievably sharp

With the EOS R camera’s electronic viewfinder, what you see is what you get: an ultra sharp and bright view of the subject.

Go ahead, take a VERY close look.

According to Canon, is this because the EOS R camera’s AF system features an incredible 5,655 manually selectable AF points. Combined with a focus area that covers approx. 88% horizontal and 100% vertical when using RF lenses and select EF lenses, this AF system helps ensure swift and accurate focus no matter where your subject is located in the frame.

Photographing in low light can be incredibly intimidating, especially for those just starting out. However, the R's standard ISO sensitivity range (100–40000 for stills and 100–25600 for video; 100–12800 for 4K video shooting) aims to make low light photography possible even in the most challenging locations.

Don't be fooled by the R's compact design. This camera packs a serious hardware punch. According to Canon, it's new mirrorless camera features a 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor with approx. 30.3 effective megapixels for stunning results with incredible detail and clarity, even in low-light situations. It’s powered by the DIGIC 8 Image Processor, which enables an expansive ISO range, enhances Image Stabilization and turbocharges operations across the board for outstanding image quality and impressive performance.

Remember when purchasing a 256GB SD card was a BIG DEAL? Now, particularly if one shoots video, it's a necessity to have lots and lots of digital room available. Knowing how valuable every SD, micro SD and external hard drive is to photographers and videographers, the R offers a file option called Compact Raw (.CR3). Smaller than RAW files, C-RAW files can be processed in camera, can render an L-sized JPEG, are compatible with the Digital Lens Optimizer and more.
So, one see's all these advanced features at work and falls head over heels with the R. However, there is a hurdle: the price.
