Holiday Photo Tips from Samy’s Photo Camp Students

December 24, 2017  |  by Deborah Cloyed
One of the classes in our after school photography course is Storytelling.  Students learn how a single photo can tell a story, or how a series of photographs can evoke the overall spirit of an event.  Like a holiday or New Years Eve party!
So if you are attending family or friend parties this year and want to capture the event right, here’s some tips from our students.
How to Photography a Holiday Party:
1. Photograph the decorations.  People put a lot of time and effort into decorating — whether the Christmas tree, the menorah, or flowers and candles for the table.  Take still life shots of all the festive details.
2. Photograph the food.  Before everyone digs in, take close-ups of the holiday goodies.  Check your background, moving items if need be, or using the table cloth, or a blurred out background.  Iced cookies, roasted turkeys, spiral hams - all make beautiful photographs.
3. Take candids.  Practice your candid shots by standing off to the side and taking pictures as people arrive (hugs and smiles) or tell funny stories (laughter erupts).
4. Take formals.  Arrange people on the couch, or better yet take them outside and look for rocks, logs — things you can us to arrange people at different heights.  Direct the photo.  Project with your voice and instruct everyone to squish together.  One, two, three… Cheese!
5. Celebrate traditions.   Does your family always do something special for the holiday?  Toast apple cider?  Dance salsa?  Write New Year’s Resolutions?  Try to capture the details and moments that you’ll want to remember forever.
Happy Holidays!
