Sigma 50-100mm 1.8 Art Lens Review

June 07, 2016  |  by samys
There is something so Zen and Japanese about the way Sigma approaches the world of photography. They have managed to develop both some of the most incredible lenses as well as some very unusual cameras, through their use of the Foveon technology. As odd as it seems I have blown photographs up to 60" from their little DP1X 5mp camera and it will still hold up even larger. The color palette so pleasing, very Filmic. Que the spotlight...ladies and gentleman I give you the Sigma 50-100mm 1.8 Art Lens for the APS-C for Sigma, Nikon, Canon and Sony with their adapter. Not a typo, the widest aperture all the way through the zoom range is a whopping and unheard of F/1.8. Sigma 50-100mm 1.8 art lensWhen I was first handed this lens by Samy, he told me it was the only one in the country. I felt honored. I must admit that it is so much fun and a privilege to be able to try out lenses and camera equipment. Often weeks, before they are released. The sense of honor was, however, mixed with a bit of fear that I would only have one day to try out the new Sigma 50-100mm 1.8 Art Lens when I prefer at least seven days to truly try out new equipment. Happily, it worked out that I had more than enough time and I this has turned into the lens that I can't live without. The Sigma 50-100mm 1.8 Art Lens is a magical lens which is so well priced for such an incredible level of quality.  The build: solid. The glass: mesmerizing. It is like looking into a beautiful jewel comparable to the best German-made lenses. Sigma 50-100mm 1.8 art lensHaving handled so many cameras and lenses over the past 40 years, I have come to approach reviews with a Kerouac stream of consciousness style. For me, the most important part of doing reviews is to describe my impressions of the photography equipment. In other words, I go with sharing my gut feelings rather than examining the minute technical details. How does it feel to handle? Do the images measure up or have some extraordinary quality? Describing my impressions of these aspects of the camera equipment is where I focus my camera and lens reviews. I get my hands on the equipment and present images I took to show what it can do.  The images I present are slightly enhanced, as I would deliver them to clients, but otherwise are from the gear that is being reviewed. Sigma 50-100mm 1.8 art lensMy camera for the Sigma 50-100mm 1.8 Art Lens review test was the new Canon 80D (no Adderall required). A marriage made in heaven, as I'm sure it will be on a Nikon or other camera. I used this combination for an assignment to make 3/4 and head shots of 41 Samy's Camera managers of Samy's seven locations, including San Francisco, May's PhotoCon LA 2016. We printed and framed 11 x 14" prints for the walls at the event. Sigma 50-100mm 1.8 art lensWhy APS-C? Hello!!! The quality of the new APS-C size is so good and if they made a 1.8 for full frame it would be the size of Cadillac. It is quite manageable but so sturdy. You can even use this on the newer Full Frame sensor cameras that switch automatically to the APS-C size. Sigma 50-100mm 1.8 art lensSigma, you clever company of geniuses, I know what you are doing. You are definitely sharpshooters! You have identified that the 70-200mm 2.8 is one of the most popular lenses for still and video. So why not a 50-100mm 1.8 that when shot wide open produces that magic? That magic that I got tons of compliments for at PhotoCon LA 2016. Yes, Sigma you made me look good. Photojournalists, the pap, and social/lifestyle photographer and, the group that will benefit the most, the video and indie movie makers will all love this lens. The Sigma 50-100mm 1.8 Art Lens will allow them to use more existing ambience light with less kicker lights and a beautiful, creamy, out of focus background. Sigma 50-100mm 1.8 art lensPut this beauty in your quiver, and hold on for the compliments you will surely get when you show the work!
