When one mentions the name Tamron the first thing that comes to mind is the legendary lens with a great reputation ….ta da.. the 90mm Macro. Well, Tamron has worked very hard to up their already upped game…this is the
Tamron SP 90mm F2.8 Di VC USD 1:1 Macro.
Last week I was handed this lens and it felt quite solid and well built but not too heavy. When asked to review I always try to just take out the product without reading anything and see if I can figure it out and also not be influenced by others opinions as well. I like to just make my conclusion after shooting with it for 4 or 5 days. This lens was paired to a Canon 80D which is quite a lovely camera itself and up to resolving the quality and detail delivered by this lens.

I have to make a confession, I stand in awe of macro photographers and do not really have the patience to consistently shoot in that marvelous tiny and colorful universe. I think that is what I think of most in that macro world…the color of insects, critters flowers and the light transmitted through precious jewels or the light and texture and detail of the works of an opened Swiss timepiece. But one has to be very disciplined and patient to photograph in this world. But when everything comes together...subject, quality of light and color the detail and sharpness the results can be quite stunning especially with a large image that holds together when shown on a large monitor or a very large print.
Tamron has made a lens that is also a very good tool that will further enable this group who find this huge/tiny world to explore and photograph in their own back gardens and others using the 90mm for portraits or landscapes to produce the best images possible.

One feature I discovered as I was testing for this review for Samy’s Camera was the new and improved highly effective VC stabilization…I found out later it was an X/Y stabilization which vastly improves the prevention of camera shake. This is really a valuable asset when hand holding this lens in waning light to closely photograph a tiny subject or something of interest in the full-sized world when finding oneself in a dim, low light situation when the camera is off the tripod.
I enjoyed using this for street photography as well…I was shooting at the equivalent of 144mm (on a full frame camera) on the 1.6X sensor 80D and 135mm on the 1.5X crop sensors such as Nikon and Sony.

It amazes me that Tamron can produce a lens that bests their best which was probably one of the best out there already.
I have been a customer of Samy’s Camera since they first opened 40 years ago and I can tell you this after working with Samy and his great people for a number of months now that there will be a Samy’s Camera expert in the store or a class who can guide you and help you discover how to use this and other lenses and cameras since most are incredible and talented photographers themselves in their own right.
