The Rise of Retrotech (And 4 Must-Have Instant Cameras for #BacktoSchool)

August 19, 2016  |  by Samy's Camera
These days, it seems nearly impossible to keep up to date with the latest and greatest in technology. For photographers, every few years calls for a gear upgrade, whether it be a new camera, flash, memory card, or lighting kit. However, especially among millennials, a surprising trend is building up steam that has created a new market niche: Retrotech. Back in 2008, Kodak announced that, with the overwhelming preference for digital, they would cease production on their, once iconic, instant cameras. Fast-forward less than a decade later, FujiFilm and a few startups have decided to fill that nostalgic void with a twist on a beloved classic. Sure, most of us have inherited some kind of long-retired camera from our parents or grandparents. However, it’s rare to find these older cameras in working condition; and, it’s even rarer to find film that will accommodate them. It may be a bit of a trip to see these instant cameras pop up in your local camera shop (like Samy’s Camera) or even in hip apparel boutiques. But, this resurgence has not only given younger generations a chance to experiment; instant snapshots are bringing people together, just like the good ol’ days. Tangible Media is Making a Comeback

In modern times, it’s easy to take having a record of one’s life for granted. The process is simple, accessible and photos are instantly stored. However, in the age of one and zeros, not having a secure backup of one’s media can lead to a complete loss of captured memories and coveted data. Embracing tangible media again is apparent not just in photography's retro comeback; but, in the increased popularity of vinyl records, journals, and book clubs. There’s something quite satisfying about holding the written word, a musical journey, or a captured memory.

Instant Gratification

Speaking of captured memories, how fun was it to watch your photos develop right before your eyes? Sure, the internet and downloadable content have shaped a generation that has shorter attention spans and higher expectations when it comes to turn-around times; but, if you’re like me, the anticipation of impatiently watching all those colors come together to form a single image is endlessly satisfying. Not to mention I get to stick the finished product on my fridge.

They’re Just Plain Fun
