#WeddingWednesday: Six New Year's Resolutions for Photographers

January 18, 2017  |  by Kylie Nicholson
I’m not normally one for resolutions, but I do like to sit down at the beginning of the year and set some overarching goals for the new year. So, I guess am I one for resolutions after all! Here are six ways photographers can start 2017 off on the right foot. [caption id="attachment_3826" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Credit: Kylie Nicholson[/caption]

Get Excited about 2017 and 2018 Bookings!

The weather might be cold and frozen now, but love is still in the air (and was over the holidays!). There are tons of newly engaged couples looking to book their wedding photographer now, so make sure you’re top of mind. Reach out to potential clients, make sure your website and social media are in tip top shape (refer to my post on branding if you need any help). One quick tip: post your best images to your website and social media to attract your ideal clients. Remind everyone that you photograph weddings by showing them your best work.

Be Proactive about Bookkeeping

Many tax programs just made forms available, so start getting your receipts, invoices and other tax documents together now—and stay on top of it to make March much less stressful. Resolve to stay on top of it all year to make next year’s taxes a breeze.

Network… aka Support Your Fellow Creatives

Make 2017 a year about lifting up those around you. Whether it’s fellow photographers or other wedding vendors, make it a point to genuinely get to know your fellow creatives. Figure out what you can offer them, and make it a point to help out those around you. You never know when it will come back to benefit you. Invest in New Gear, or Tune Up the Gear You Have

New year, new gear! Now’s the time to stock up your arsenal for the year ahead. Don’t need anything new? Take the time to go through and clean all of your lenses. Maybe even send your camera body in for maintenance. One of my lenses is sticking on the zoom, so I’m sending it in this month to get it ready for the new year!

Get a Good Calendar… and Write it Out!

Write out the photoshoots you have booked for the year. Seeing your plans gets your excited and also keeps you on track for the year to come. You’re going to accomplish so much!

Set Goals… Booking and Otherwise

Think about what you really want to accomplish this year. Maybe that’s increasing your volume of bookings or booking at a higher price point. Perhaps you want to photograph your first wedding (yay!). Maybe you want to branch out into a new market. Maybe you want to direct your photography style in a different direction. Whatever it is, write it out now. Make goals to look back at as this year progresses. It’s going to be great! [caption id="attachment_3825" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Credit: Kylie Nicholson[/caption] Happy New Year! Kylie
