  • G - G is short for 'Gold'. It refers to Sony lenses that are considered to be the very best, and most professional on the market.
  • ZA - Also known as Zeiss Alpha, Zeiss is a brand of Sony and are similar to the G range of Sony lenses.
  • SSM - Short for SuperSonic Motor, this is Sony's own version of an ultrasonic motor that is used for fast, quiet AF operations.
  • SAM - SAM is short for Smooth Autofocus Motor. SAM is built into select low end Sony Lenses and have been on the market since 2009. When shopping for Sony OSS lenses, you will find that SAM lenses are generally fast and quiet, but they are not as good as SSM lenses. SAM lenses also have a plastic build which makes them cheaper than SSM, ZA, or G range lenses.
  • OSS - OSS is also known as Optical SteadyShot and refers to a particular set of lenses that has a special stabilization feature. It should be noted when you want to shop for Sony OSS lenses, the Sony Alpha mount lenses do not include OSS. This is because Sony uses sensor based IS with both the DSLR and SLT cameras.
